From the Pastor’s Desk

There are times when we are confronted by the reality of human suffering in ways that we would just as soon not have to experience, especially when it is one of our own who is suffering.  This week we, as a church and community of faith and family of God, were confronted by this reality, a reality that is all too real and stressful for everyone in one way or another.

With the revelation of what has happened, we find ourselves in conflict – emotional, spiritual, mental, and even physical conflict as we try to absorb and process the reality of what has happened.  There are many questions, some of them will be answered, others will not, and we will have to wrestle with these questions and emotions and thoughts and feelings that we are experiencing.

We will have to deal with a full range of emotions from shock to sadness to anger to frustration to disbelief to denial.  We are experiencing grief in all of its varied forms, and some of us will do better than others as we try to cope with the situation.

The road ahead will be a difficult one, and right now we find ourselves lost in the darkness of uncertainty about the future.  We don’t know what will happen, we don’t know what to expect, and we don’t know the outcome to all of this.  This uncertainly drives home the reality of our loss of control and the loss of how things used to be, and we will have to rely not on ourselves but the gracious mercies of God and each other to get us through.  And we will get through this.  We will find ourselves back in the light and on the other side of this cloud of darkness.  We will be better, stronger, and closer for it.  We will be healed – all of us.  But it will take time.

In the meantime, we will persevere and endure, and we will do it together.  As a minister, I have many roles, but my primary role is that of spiritual guide, counselor, and advisor.  This is why I have been called to pastoral ministry for times like these.  I invite you and encourage you to use me for this purpose.  If you need to talk about this, if you need help in absorbing and processing and coping with this situation we are in together as a family, I urge you to come and see me.  Together we will receive and experience the comfort from God, and we will be better able to give comfort and love and grace to all of those who need our ministry of presence the most.

Listen to God’s Word in Paul’s second letter to the Christians in Corinth,

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort. (2 Corinthians 1:3-7)

Always in God’s grip,

Dan

From the Gulf Coast Mission Team

We are in the final stages of our planning and preparation for our trip to the Gulf Coast from October 7 - 14. The team is so excited to be going, and we are eager to serve our neighbors in Hattiesburg, MS and the surrounding area.  We are grateful for all of you who have given so much of your time, talents, and resources, and now we ask all of you to join together in giving your continued prayers, service, sacrifice, and financial support help to make our trip possible.

Please help us in meeting our goal of raising $10,000 to fund our trip and give as a gift from us to the people in the midst of the devastated areas. Please make out your checks to the church and note on the check that it is for the hurricane relief fund. The money we raise will help finance the trip, and the remaining money will be given as a gift to Westminster Presbyterian Church in Hattiesburg to help support them in their work and insure that they will be able to continue to host future work crews. Together we can give our lives to the service of Christ’s church and join with God in God’s mission of bringing hope out of chaos to so many.

Hello God, I called tonight

Hello God, I called tonight

To talk a little while

I need a friend who’ll listen

To my anxiety and trial.

You see, I can’t quite make it

Through a day just on my own…

I need your love to guide me,

So I’ll never feel alone.

I want to ask you please to keep,

My family safe and sound.

Come and fill their lives with confidence for whatever fate they’re bound.

Give me faith, dear God, to face

Each hour throughout the day,

And not to worry over things

I can’t change in any way

I thank you God, for being home

And listening to my call,

For giving me such good advice

When I stumble and fall.

Your number, God, is the only one

That answers every time.

I never get a busy signal, never had to pay a dime.

So thank you, God, for listening

To my troubles and my sorrow,

Good night, God, I love You, too,

And I’ll call again tomorrow!

Pumpkin Pie

Makes 1 9” pie

1 cup dark brown sugar

½ teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons corn starch

1 ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

½ cup powdered milk

½ teaspoon nutmeg

2 cups fresh pumpkin

½ teaspoon ginger

1 can evaporated milk

¼ teaspoon cloves

1 egg

Mix all ingredients except the evaporated milk in a blender. When mixed, pop middle cap off blender and slowly pour evaporated milk into mixture while blender is running. (Make sure you scrape sides!)

Pour into pie shell and bake in preheated oven at 425° for 15 minutes; then lower temperature (without opening oven door!) to 350° and bake for 45-60 minutes more.  If crust edges are browning too much, cover with foil partway through baking.

Pie Crust

2 cups all-purpose flour (not self-rising)

¾ cup shortening

1 teaspoon salt

¼ cup (give or take) of ice water

Cut shortening into flour and salt until it resembles crumbs. Using a fork, gradually blend water into mixture until it begins to hold together in a ball and leave the sides of the bowl. (Humidity and other factors can change the amount of water used.)  Roll ½ of dough into a circle big enough to fit in a 9” pie plate with some overhang. Shape edges however you like, fill and bake.  Save the other ½ for another pie, either frozen raw or partially baked.
