Thoughts From the Interim Pastor…

“Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people,

once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”

                                                                              -- I Peter 1:10

Grace to you and peace from God and from our Lord Jesus Christ!

Thought #1)  In January I introduced you to the five fundamental tasks of interim ministry, and said that the five tasks were done together by the interim minister, the session, and the congregation. While they are not done in any particular order, the first one is usually “Coming to Terms with History,” which we do as I get to know you and you get to know me.  One way of doing this task is through the small group gatherings and Bible studies that begin the mission study process.

This task has actually been on-going since the day I got here. Every time you tell me stories about this church and your connection with it, every time I see pictures of things you have done, every time we discuss a particular activity within the life of the church that may or may not have been successful or even tried, we are coming to terms with Finley’s history.  One of my goals for you all is to celebrate that history as much as we can. The luncheon last Sunday where we enjoyed wedding pictures from many families was one such celebration, because our individual histories make up the history of this church, as well as our collective histories together. I look forward to all these story times together, so please take note of the times and places of the small group gatherings, and make sure you try to attend – if you can’t come when you’re specifically invited, please pick one and join us, because we’ll be celebrating you.

Thought #2)   I hope you all are having a most blessed Lenten journey. While I always give something up because it has been part of my own spiritual discipline for too many years to count, and because it honors my mother and father who modeled this spirituality for us when we were small, this year I’ve added our Wednesday night Bible studies as part of my own Lenten journey. I cannot tell you how much these Wednesday nights are meaning to me.  We share while we break bread together, and then we spend time taking a long look at Scripture that deals with hospitality and caring for one another and for our brothers and sisters not of this church. I have come away from both sessions so far with the feeling that the Holy Spirit has been working among us for at least an hour and a half! Please feel free to join us on any Wednesday that you can.

Thought #3)   We have several things planned for Holy Week and Easter for which I hope you will take some time.  I look forward to celebrating this holy season with you.

Yours In Christ,

        Sally Robinson

Small Group Gatherings

As Finley Memorial Church goes into the Mission Study process, we'll have a series of small group gatherings to begin the conversations. These are gatherings that are hosted  by pairs of Session members, and led by Pastor Sally.  We will be celebrating what you love about your church, and taking suggestions on the things you would like to see improved, or on things you would like to see happen.  Each of these gatherings will last no more than an hour and a half, and in the list below you will see that there are a variety of times being offered.  While you should be personally contacted about a specific time, please know that if your time of invitation is not convenient, please join another group. The important thing is not the time that you come, but that as many folks as possible do come. Remember this is your church, and this is your time to speak up and say what you want it's future to look like. We need input from every member, and we need prayer for the process from every member, so please make your plans accordingly.

Health Minute

Are you one of the many people who appreciate the availability of over-the-counter medications, but never really understood them? Although non-prescription medications seem much less dangerous, recent events with Heath Ledger have left many people nervous. When all you really want is to feel better, it may seem impossible to figure out which medications can and cannot be taken together. Although I can’t tackle them all at once, I will try to clear up some confusion about the most popular ones –those used primarily for pain and fever.

When it comes down to it, there are only two classes of over-the-counter pain medications. The first is a class of medications related to aspirin and termed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). The second is acetaminophen (Tylenol), which is in a class of its own. The NSAIDS can be used to decrease pain, fever, and inflammation. They can cause stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, and kidney disease. Tylenol can be used to reduce pain and fever, but does not affect inflammation. It does not usually cause stomach problems, but can cause liver toxicity and even fatal liver failure if taken in high doses. I have personally seen people die from overdoses of acetaminophen!

Taking multiple medications from either class can have serious consequences for your health. Be sure to read the active ingredients for any medication. The only way I know to warn of potential interactions is to list the medications in each class, including prescriptions. I will include as many as I can think of, but if you are unsure, please ask your doctor or pharmacist! Many medications contain multiple active ingredients.

NSAIDS: aspirin (Excedrin, Alka-Seltzer, BC Powder, Fiorinal, Percodan); ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Combunox); naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn, Anaprox); diclofenac (Voltaren, Arthrotec); etodolac; fenoprofen; indomethacin (Indocin); meloxicam (Mobic); oxaprozin (Daypro); piroxicam (Feldene); sulindac (Clinoril); ketorolac (Toradol); ketoprofen (Oruvail); celecoxib (Celebrex); nabumetone (Relafen).

Acetaminophen: Tylenol, Excedrin, Nyquil, Dayquil, Dristan, Theraflu, Percogesic, Percocet, Darvocet, Fioricet, Ultracet, Endocet, Roxicet, Lorcet, Lortab, Vicodin, Norco. Plus any over-the-counter medication that lists acetaminophen as an ingredient (read the labels!), any prescription medication that has APAP at the end of the generic name on the bottle, and most narcotic medications with two different doses listed (e.g. Percocet 5/325 mg or Vicodin 5/500 mg).

My typical recommendation for maximum over-the-counter pain relief is to take ibuprofen 200 mg, 3 tablets 4 times daily (about every 6 hours). Alternate this with extra strength acetaminophen 500 mg, 2 tablets 4 times daily so that you are getting one or the other every 2 to 3 hours. If this in ineffective, you should discuss stronger medications with your physician. Please do not take any more than this maximum recommended daily dosage, and definitely make sure you aren’t taking two medications from the same category above.

bnox tops logoA big Thank You  to all who have contributed to VSDB’s BoxTops for Education program by clipping coupons, shopping online via the Marketplace or using the BoxTops Visa Card - I just received a check for $405.28 this semester for the library!!!

Keep on clipping, shopping and charging!! I send in the next batch of coupons in March.

In case you are not familiar with the BoxTops for Education program, here’s a brief description:

General Mills will pay 10 cents for every boxtop coupon clipped from participating General Mills products. BoxTops for Education coupons are found on many common products that families purchase at their local grocery stores. Some of you may already be participating in the BoxTops program at your children’s schools, but if you are not and are so inclined, VSDB and I would greatly appreciate the BoxTops you could collect. The money earned from the clipped boxtops goes to the library fund at VSDB. There is a well-marked red collection box on the table just outside of the church office. Just drop any BoxTops you collect in the box. This year I am planning to spend the BoxTops money to purchase large print books for our visually impaired students.

A complete list of participating products is posted on the table outside the church office. Here’s a few of the BoxTop products included in the program:

The Finley men need your help. We meet on the first Sunday of each month for breakfast, devotions and fellowship. Our average attendance is about ten. The breakfast meeting begins at 8:30 AM.

The men are working with the buildings and grounds committee to help maintain the physical property of the church. We are making a list of projects around the church, which will be posted for all to look at.

We need your help with this list!  If you know of something that needs done, contact our leader Paul Willey so that it gets on the list.

Some routine maintenance projects that are perhaps little known include- checking the fire extinguishers and initialing the card on each once a month, tightening the screws on all chairs twice a year; oil and tighten screws on all the doors every six months; replacing burned out light bulbs as needed; and maintaining a supply of cleaning products (our custodians usually will put a note in the treasurers box when they need something).

Our group talks about these and other projects at our monthly breakfast meetings. We would like to do some outreach in the community, but we could use a few more men with skills they would be willing to share. The next meeting is March 2nd at 8:30AM in the basement. Let’s have a big turnout - y’all come.

Several times in the past few months we have noticed that there is a small amount of garbage left in the large trash cans. Anyone with a sense of smell could tell there was something in the can.

We think the large cans are really too big for small groups and people are not taking them out back so as not to waste a large trash bag. To help alleviate this problem, we have purchased a couple of small trash cans so that smaller groups using the kitchen will find it easier to take the garbage out back by the storage building and put it in the large cans there. This will also help to keep the kitchen cleaner.

Please help us get the word out to all the groups that use the kitchen that we have the smaller trash cans.  Please!--never leave garbage in the kitchen over night, or until the can is full.

Thanks for your help.
